The literacy, education and employment rates of PNG women are lower than those of PNG males, and violence against women is reported to be one of the highest in the world (1) These workshops seek to bring solution to this problem.
Upon visiting her home village, Naomi Semi, a passionate PNG Baptist woman, was saddened by the number of girls who were not completing their education. Naomi herself was grateful for the support of her family and community as she completed her Masters of Environmental Health at Flinders University..
This sadness prompted her to pray and serve. Her answer was a workshop for girls. Inspired by similar programs run by UNICEF, World Vision and the World Bank, Naomi devised her own program.
Subjects covered in the workshop include
- Goal setting
2. Identify and minimize distractions that may effect their education
3. Health and hygiene
4. Understanding their menstrual cycle
5. Sex education : avoiding early pregnancy and disease
6. Resisting peer pressure
7. Rights of women and children in PNG
8. Basic financial literacy
Recently, Naomi was having a chat with BWP President, Elissa Macpherson and was sharing her passion for these workshops. When Elissa discovered she was financing and resourcing these workshops by herself, she believed BWP would want to support this amazing initiative. Now we invite you to join us.
It cost about AUD$15 for each of the 60 girls to participate in one of the weekend workshops. The more support we raise, the more girls can have this wonderful opportunity and attend additional follow up workshops.
